I draw recreations of classical poses using contemporary models in graphite and charcoal on aquarelle watercolor paper. My work sits within the tradition of da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo, but departs from them in its approach. The physical nature of bodies has changed. Most of us no longer have heavily muscled bodies. Nor do we sit and stand in contorted ways holding garlands of fruit. My drawings describe the change.
I draw full length portraits in the style of Gainsborough and Sargent, with and without clothing. Which interpretation makes sense? Why?
I draw vast expanses of space as well, like Hopper but without people. That comes from growing up in the Midwest. Flatlander.
The feel and sound of graphite and charcoal on rough watercolor paper makes me want to draw every day.
I want you to feel like a Greco/Roman god/dess. Or at least gawk at one.
